How To Read the Bible

Whether you’re opening the Bible for the first time or you’ve been reading it for years, it can sometimes feel overwhelming. The good news is that God’s Word is meant to be clear and life-giving.

A simple rhythm of Observation, Interpretation, and Application can help you not only understand what the Bible says but also live it out.

1. Observation – What does the passage say?

  1. Start by carefully reading the passage. Then look back and notice the details: repeated words, key phrases, or cross-references. Let your curiosity guide you as you ask questions.

    • Who is speaking or being addressed?

    • What is happening?

    • When and where is this taking place?

    • Why is this important?

    • What other questions come up as you read?

    2. Interpretation – What does the passage mean?

After noticing what’s there, dig into the meaning. Context is key! Consider what the author is trying to communicate and what God may be saying through the text. Resources like Bible dictionaries and commentaries can help uncover historical or cultural background.

    • What’s the context?

    • Why did the author include this?

    • What truth is God revealing here?

    3. Application – How should I respond?

Scripture is meant to transform us, not just inform us. After studying, take time to ask how the truth of the passage should shape your life today.

    • How does this change the way I live?

    • How does this truth invite me to grow or be transformed?

    • What does it look like to put this into practice right now?
